Nature and Reserves in Taiwan

It’s easy to forget, but Taiwan is mostly mountains. Two-thirds of the island is covered in ranges, some above 3,900 metres, and the nature here is the reason travellers extend their visit.

Taroko and the east coast

Taroko Park is a gorge of white marble cliffs cut by a river, dramatic and accessible from Hualien. Note: after the 2024 quake some trails are closed, so check the status ahead. Next to it, the Qingshui Cliffs drop into a turquoise sea. Tours to Taroko update according to what’s open.

Alishan

A misty forest of ancient cypress trees, a narrow historic mountain railway, and sunrise over a sea of clouds. One of the most beautiful experiences on the island. It’s worth sleeping in the mountain area.

Sun Moon Lake — mountain quiet in the heart of the island

Sun Moon Lake

A calm mountain lake in the centre, with temples, cycling paths, and boat rides. A perfect slow-down point in the middle of a route, accessible from Taichung.

Yushan and the high mountains

Yushan peak (3,952 m) is the highest in northeast Asia, and can be climbed with a permit arranged ahead. For anyone who doesn’t climb peaks, there are endless more accessible trails.
