Where to Stay in Taiwan: Areas and Hotels
The golden rule for lodging in Taiwan is simple: base yourself near a metro or train station, and everything else sorts itself out. A ten-minute ride from the hotel to the sights is worth more than a luxurious room in an isolated spot. These are the convenient areas in each city.
Taipei
- Ximending — the youth district, nightlife, shopping, and food, central and well connected. You can compare hotels in Ximending.
- Taipei Main Station — the rail hub, especially convenient for anyone heading out on day trips and to the south. See hotels near Taipei Main Station.
- Da’an — quiet, green, and a little pricier, good for couples.

The south and centre
In Kaohsiung, base yourself around the Formosa Boulevard or Central Park stations, central and connected by KMRT. You can compare hotels in central Kaohsiung. In Taichung, it’s convenient around the train station or the Fengjia area.
Hualien and Tainan
In Hualien, sleep in the centre around the train station, a base for Taroko and the coast. In Tainan, base yourself in the historic centre, near Chihkan Tower and the Confucius Temple, with most of the sights and food within walking distance.
