Cities in Japan
Taichung: A Guide to the Central City
Taichung sits right in the middle, and that’s exactly its role in most trips: a midway stop on the way from north to south, and the launch point for Sun Moon Lake and the Alishan mountains. Its weather is among the most pleasant on the island, without the heavy humidity of Taipei or the heat of the south.
The city itself won’t stop you in your tracks, but it has a huge night market, some fine modern architecture, and some of the country’s best sunsets a short ride away.
Getting around
The high-speed rail from Taipei arrives in about 50 minutes, around 700 NT$ (roughly ₪80). The HSR station sits outside the centre, and from there a local train or bus takes you in. Within Taichung itself public transport is less dense than Taipei’s, and a taxi or bike is sometimes more convenient.
What to see
Gaomei Wetlands — a coastal wetland reserve with a boardwalk that leads out into the water, white wind turbines on the horizon, and reflections at sunset. Arrive about an hour before the sun drops. Check a tide table first: at high tide the boardwalk closes.
National Taichung Theater — a building by the Japanese architect Toyo Ito, without a single straight line, worth a look both outside and in. Miyahara is an old pharmacy from the Japanese-occupation era turned into a lavish ice-cream and sweets shop. Rainbow Village is small and colourful, a quick loop if you’re nearby.
Taiwan’s biggest night market
Fengjia is the largest night market in the country, vast and buzzing with students from the nearby university. This is the place to try something new. Half of Taiwan’s food trends were born at stalls like these. Come hungry.
A base for Sun Moon Lake and Alishan
The main reason to stay in Taichung is what surrounds it. Sun Moon Lake is a calm mountain lake with temples and cycling paths, about 90 minutes by bus. Alishan offers misty forest, a historic mountain railway, and sunrise over a sea of clouds. You can arrange a tour to Sun Moon Lake that leaves from the city and saves the logistics.
Where to stay
The most convenient bases are around Taichung Station or the younger Fengjia area. You can compare hotels in Taichung ahead of time.
From here you can return to the main guide or carry on to the itineraries.
Frequently asked questions
How long should you give Taichung?
A day or two for the city itself. Most people use it as a base for Sun Moon Lake (about 90 minutes by bus) or as a stop on the way to Alishan, so the plan depends on the rest of your route.
How do you get from Taipei to Taichung?
On the high-speed rail in about 50 minutes, around 700 NT$ (roughly ₪80). The HSR station is outside the centre, linked by bus and local train to the city core.
Is the Rainbow Village worth visiting?
Rainbow Village is small and colourful, and a loop takes a quarter of an hour. Nice if you're in the area, but not worth a long trip on its own.
