About Japan

Japan packs about 125 million people onto a chain of islands. Tokyo and Osaka run on glass towers and neon. An hour out by train, the country turns into forested mountains, centuries-old temples and the snow cap of Mt Fuji. Trains leave on the minute, the streets feel safe after dark, and most things simply work.

One country, many worlds

The same trip looks different in each season: cherry blossom in April, red maple in November, a steaming onsen in the snow. This guide covers what to see, when to come, and what it actually costs.

Three facts before you start

Visa

Israelis are visa-free for up to 90 days; passport must be valid for the duration of the stay.

Flights

El Al flies direct Tel Aviv–Tokyo (Narita) up to 4 times a week, about 11 hours; one-stop connections via European or Gulf hubs are also common.

When to fly

Spring (late Mar–Apr) for cherry blossom and autumn (Oct–Nov) for fall colour; the June–July rainy season and humid peak summer are less ideal.
