When to Visit Taiwan: Seasons and Weather

The weather is what should decide your travel dates for Taiwan, more than anything else. The island is subtropical, hot and humid in summer and pleasant in spring and autumn, and typhoon season can disrupt a whole route.

The short answer: October–November and March–April are the best time.

Month by month

  • March–April — pleasant spring, blossoms, temperatures of 18–25°C. One of the best windows, though the north still gets the odd shower.
  • May–June — warming and getting humid, with the “plum rain” (meiyu) season bringing grey, wet days.
  • July–September — hot and very humid (feels above 33°C), and the peak of typhoon season. Uncomfortable for anyone not used to a tropical climate.
  • October–November — in our view the best window: drier, pleasant, the mountains at their finest, and typhoon season behind you.
  • December–February — mild winter. Pleasant and sunny in the south, rainy and cool in the north (12–18°C).

Where in the country, not only when

Taiwan is long, and the difference between north and south matters. If you travel in winter, consider giving more days to the south (Kaohsiung, Tainan), where it’s warm and sunny, and fewer to rainy Taipei.

What to pack

In any season: breathable clothes, a folding umbrella (always), and comfortable walking shoes. In winter add a warm layer and a rain jacket. In summer, sunscreen and a hat. If you plan mountain trails, bring real shoes, because mountain weather turns fast.
